1TIMOTHY 2:1-8
LESSON #6
ORDERLINESS IN PUBLIC PRAYER

MEMORY VERSE: 1TIMOTHY 2:8

  • IN TODAY’S LESSON WE WILL DISCUSS WHAT SHOULD BE THE ORDER OF THE PUBLIC WORSHIP SERVICE.
  • READ 1TIM 2:1-8 PUBLIC PRAYER
    • PUBLIC PRAYER SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF PRAYER:
    • (1-2)
      • SUPPLICATIONS (OFFERING A REQUEST FOR A HEARTFELT NEED)
        • SUPPLICATIONS ARE PETITIONS FOR GOD’S ORDAINED ORDER TO APPEAR IN REALITY ON EARTH. (“THY WILL BE DONE IN EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN”) SOMETIMES THIS IS THE SPIRITUAL WARFARE TYPE OF PRAYER.
          • WHY DOES A CHURCH NEED TO HAVE THESE KINDS OF PUBLIC PRAYERS? SOMETIMES, IT IS THE STRENGTH OF GROUP PRAYER THAT SATAN IS DEFEATED AND A PERSON’S FAITH IS LIFTED.
      • PRAYERS
        • THIS IS A GENERAL TERM WHICH IS ALL INCLUSIVE OF WHATEVER IS THE NEED.
          • WHY DOES PAUL USE THIS WORD? WHATEVER IS NOT COVERED BY THE OTHER TYPES OF PRAYER IS COVERED BY THIS GENERAL WORD.
      • INTERCESSIONS
        • THIS TYPE OF PRAYER IS VERY IMPORTANT. IT IS THE BODY OF BELIEVERS PRAYING FOR THE NEEDS OF OTHERS IN THE CHURCH.
          • WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
            • FAITH IS STRENGTHENED IN A GROUP.
            • LOVE AND CONCERN FOR OTHER’S PROBLEMS IS PART OF SHOWING LOVE IN THE CHURCH.
            • GIVING THANKS
        • THE CHURCH BODY SHOULD HEAR THE PRAISE REPORTS WHEN GOD ANSWERS PRAYER.
          • WHY? WHEN WE HEAR ABOUT AN ANSWER TO PRAYER, WE ARE MOVED TO FAITH TO TRUST GOD FOR OTHER THINGS IN OUR LIVES. A HEALTHY CHRISTIAN CHURCH WILL HAVE EVIDENCE OF GOD MOVING, WORKING, AND ANSWERING PRAYER.
    • PRAYER FOR THOSE IN AUTHORITY OVER US (2)
      • THERE SHOULD BE PUBLIC PRAYER FOR GOVERNMENT LEADERS AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS. WHY?
        • THERE ARE TWO REASONS PAUL GIVES AS TO WHY WE ARE SUPPOSED TO PRAY FOR THOSE IN AUTHORITY:
          • THAT WE MAY LEAD A QUIET AND PEACEFUL LIFE IN GODLINESS AND HONESTY.
        • WE NEED TO PRAY FOR GOVERNMENT LEADERS TO MAKE WISE LAWS THAT DO NOT INFRINGE ON THE FREEDOMS WE HAVE TO WORSHIP GOD.
          • WE NEED TO PRAY FOR CHURCH LEADERS THAT WE MAY BE TAUGHT HOW TO LIVE IN GODLINESS.
          • THAT PEOPLE MAY COME TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF SALVATION AND THE TRUTH IN CHRIST.
        • WE NEED TO PRAY FOR GOVERNMENT LEADERS SO THEY DO NOT MAKE LAWS THAT PREVENT THE SPREAD OF THE GOSPEL.
        • WE NEED TO PRAY FOR RELIGIOUS LEADERS THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE WISDOM IN GUIDING THE CHURCH INTO AREAS OF EXPANDING THE SPREAD OF THE GOSPEL.
      • THE ONE GOD AND THE ONE MEDIATOR, JESUS CHRIST, WHO GAVE HIMSELF TO BE A RANSOM: (5-6)
        • THIS IS THE TRUTH THAT MUST GO OUT THROUGH PREACHING AND TEACHING, THAT JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY WAY TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN MAN AND GOD, AND THAT JESUS CHRIST PAID THE PRICE FOR OUR REDEMPTION. THIS TRUTH IS THE BASIS FOR ALL PRAYER.

    • PRINCIPLE #14

THERE SHOULD BEPUBLIC PRAYER FOR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, FOR GIVING THANKS TO GOD, AND              PRAYER FORTHOSE IN AUTHORITY OVER US

      • THE MANNER OR STYLE OF PRAYER IN THE CHURCH:
      • PAUL SAYS IN VERSE 8 THAT ALL MEN SHOULD PRAY LIFTING UP HOLY HANDS WITHOUT WRATH AND DOUBTING.
        • WHETHER A PERSON RAISES HIS HANDS IN PUBLIC WORSHIP AND PRAYER IS AN INDIVIDUAL THING. NOTICE THAT PAUL DOES NOT SAY THAT ALL MEN SHOULD PRAY LIFTING UP THEIR HANDS. THAT WOULD BE AN EXTERNAL LEGALISM.
        • THE IMPORTANT PART OF PAUL’S ADMONITION IS THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE “HOLY” HANDS.
          • WHAT ARE HOLY HANDS?
            • HANDS THAT ARE NOT STAINED BY SIN.
              • HANDS THAT ARE SUBMITTED TO SERVE GOD.
        • HE ALSO SAYS “WITHOUT WRATH AND DOUBTING” (8)
          • WHEN YOU LIFT UP YOUR HANDS IN CHURCH THEY SHOULD BE HOLY. YOU SHOULD HAVE A CLEAR CONSCIENCE WITH NO ANGER AGAINST ANOTHER BROTHER OR SISTER IN THE CHURCH, AND YOU SHOULD HAVE AN ATTITUDE OF FAITH IN GOD WITHOUT ANY DOUBTS.

    • PRINCIPLE #15

LIFTING UP YOUR HANDS IN CHURCH SHOULD NEVER BE AN ACTION OF SPIRITUAL SUPERIORITY OR A LEGALISTIC RULE OR TRADITION

  • OTHER PRINCIPLES OF ORDER REGARDING PUBLIC PRAYER AND GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE CHURCH SERVICE
    • READ 1COR 14:1-5a THE ROLE OF TONGUES IN PERSONAL PRAYER
      • IN THESE VERSES PAUL IS TALKING ABOUT THE ROLE AND PURPOSE OF PRAYING IN TONGUES IN YOUR OWN PERSONAL PRAYER TIME.
        • TO PRAY IN TONGUES IS A PERSONAL, MYSTERIOUS COMMUNICATION BETWEEN YOU AND GOD. (1COR 14:2)
          • IT DOES NOT NEED INTERPRETATION BUT YOU CAN ASK GOD TO GIVE YOU AN INTERPRETATION. (1COR 14:13-14)
        • TO PRAY IN TONGUES IN YOUR OWN PERSONAL PRAYER TIME IS LEGITIMATE.(1COR 14:2, 5)
        • THE PURPOSE OF PRAYING IN TONGUES IN YOUR OWN PRAYER TIME BUILDS YOUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP TO GOD. (1COR 14:4)
    • READ 1COR 14:13-17 THE ROLE OF TONGUES IN PUBLIC PRAYER
      • PAUL IS TALKING ABOUT THE ROLE AND PURPOSE OF PRAYING IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH DURING PUBLIC PRAYER:
        • IF YOU PRAY IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH, YOU MUST INTERPRET IT INTO EVERYDAY LANGUAGE. (1COR14:5) THE PURPOSE IS TO BUILD THE CHURCH’S RELATIONSHIP TO GOD AND TO ENCOURAGE A UNITY OF SPIRIT.
            • WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE AN INTERPRETATION IF YOU PRAY IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH?
              • IN CHURCH, THE GROUP OF BELIEVERS IS AGREEING WITH YOU IN PRAYER. IF OTHER BELIEVERS DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PRAYING, THEY CANNOT AGREE IN THE SPIRIT WITH YOU, UNLESS YOU INTERPRET IT.
                • (1COR 14:16)
    • READ 1COR 14:5b-12 SPEAKING A MESSAGE IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH SERVICE
      • ALL MESSAGES SPOKEN IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH MUST BE INTERPRETED IN ORDER FOR THE CHURCH TO BE EDIFIED (BUILT UP).
        • TONGUES WITH INTERPRETATION PRODUCES:
          • REVELATION, KNOWLEDGE, PROPHECY, AND DOCTRINE THAT ALL CAN UNDERSTAND. (1COR 14:6)
    • READ 1COR 14:19-33 SPEAKING A MESSAGE IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH AND OTHER SPIRITUAL GIFTS:
      • THE GIFT OF TONGUES ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST WAS A MIRACULOUS SIGN TO THE NON-BELIEVERS, NOT A SIGN TO THE BELIEVERS. (1COR 14:22)
        • ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST, WHEN THEY SPOKE IN TONGUES THEY SPOKE IN UNDERSTANDABLE FOREIGN LANGUAGES THAT FOREIGN PEOPLE COULD UNDERSTAND.
          • USUALLY, SPEAKING AND PRAYING IN TONGUES SINCE THE DAY OF PENTECOST IS A HEAVENLY LANGUAGE THAT NO MAN CAN UNDERSTAND WITH HIS MENTAL CAPACITIES. THEREFORE, IT NEEDS INTERPRETATION.
            • THE GIFT OF PROPHECY IS A MORE VALUABLE GIFT THAN SPEAKING IN TONGUES: (1COR 14:22-25) WHY?
            • EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND IT, WHETHER HE IS A BELIEVER OR A NON-BELIEVER.
      • MESSAGES IN TONGUES SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 2 OR 3 DURING A CHURCH SERVICE WITH ONE PERSON INTERPRETING THE MESSAGES. (1COR 14:27)
        • THERE SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 2 OR 3 PROPHETIC MESSAGES IN A CHURCH SERVICE. (1COR 14:29)
        • THE PURPOSE OF ALL SPIRITUAL GIFTS USED IN THE CHURCH MUST BE USED ONLY FOR ONE PURPOSE: TO EDIFY THE CHURCH BODY. (1COR 14:16)
  • READ 1COR 14:39-40:
  • PRINCIPLES OF ORDER FROM 1COR 14:
    • PRINCIPLE #16

ALL SPEAKING OR PRAYING IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH WHEN SPOKEN IN A LOUD VOICE MUST HAVE AN INTERPRETATION

      • PRINCIPLE #17

ALL SPIRITUAL GIFTS IN OPERATION IN THE CHURCH MUST BE DONE TO EDIFY THE BODY OFBELIEVERS
